Our History

For decades, Rooted has been a cornerstone of affordable housing and community development in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, playing a pivotal role in providing homes for individuals and families facing housing insecurity.

Over the years, Rooted has evolved, expanding its impact through innovative projects, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to fostering strong, connected communities. From small-scale residential developments to large, transformative housing initiatives, the organization has continuously adapted to meet the changing needs of Nova Scotia.

  • 1981 Former City of Dartmouth Nonprofit Housing Society incorporates, acquires, and commissions rental housing for families

  • Early 1990s Dartmouth Housing builds several housing projects on development land

  • 1990 First barrier-free accessible unit built within portfolio

  • Development Focused

    2014 Invested in additional in-house maintenance capacity

  • 2022 Comprehensive portfolio revitalization begins

  • 2024 Board of Directors approve five-year, Strategic & Growth Plan

  • Early 2024 1 Circassion Drive breaks ground – the organization’s first multi-residential new build 

  • Late 2024 Dartmouth Housing rebrands as Rooted: Community Development Partners

  • July 2025 The Crosswoods welcomes 18 new households
