We are recruiting Rooted Board Members
Rooted has been providing affordable housing in HRM since 1982. With a growing portfolio of housing units and a strategic step into developing new housing, our Board has established an ambitious strategic vision for 2024 to 2029. It includes expansion of our geographic footprint outside Dartmouth and venturing beyond our historical approach of acquiring and managing single and duplex housing units to developing multi residential buildings.
With our long history in the community, Rooted enjoys many strong relationships with government, related and other community organizations, developers and other partners in the real estate and construction industries.

An Overview of Board Responsibilities
Directors have fiduciary, operational support, and board administrative responsibilities to Rooted Community Development Partners. Every Director and Officer is required to exercise their powers and discharge their duties by:
- Overseeing organizational strategy, performance, and risk management.
- Supporting growth initiatives, including development projects, acquisitions, and partnerships.
- Contributing to financial stewardship to ensure long-term sustainability.
- Participating in board committees and promoting effective governance practices.
- Fostering a culture of inclusion, accountability, and community impact.
- Providing independent judgment and constructive feedback to management.
- Acting as ambassadors for Rooted and enhancing relationships within the communities and sectors the organization serves.
- Upholding the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and fiduciary responsibility.
The ideal candidate brings a blend of professional expertise, community insight, and a dedication to social impact. The key qualifications for this role include:
- Executive leadership experience
- Strong strategic and systems thinking abilities
- Sound judgment in governance matters
- Financial literacy suitable for board oversight
- Skill in navigating complexity and competing priorities
- A collaborative leadership style that appreciates diverse perspectives
- Exceptional relationship-building abilities
- A commitment to equity, inclusion, and community impact
- A genuine passion for Rooted’s mission
- Previous experience on a board is welcome but not required; first-time executives are encouraged to apply.
As Rooted works to shape the future of community development, it is particularly interested in individuals with executive or governance experience in the following areas to enhance the board’s existing strengths.
- Manufacturing, industrial operations and skilled trades
- Building and property management
- Construction, infrastructure and development
- Education and workforce development
- Healthcare
- Human Resources and organizational development
- Information Technology and digital transformation
- Directors can expect to commit 4 – 5 hours per month (board meetings, committee meetings, preparation) and serve a three-year renewable term. The Board meets bi-monthly, approximately 6 times per year for approximately 2 hours, depending on the agenda.
- From time-to-time, Directors may also be invited to attend other meetings and/or events with community, industry and/or government partners and collaborators.
